Burst Pipes
Burst pipes can happen when you have old pipe work, such as Dux Qest, running through the house. It does not last forever. Rats can also chew through water pipes.
If you have a burst pipe, we’ll quickly identify the source and then repair it, if possible. If we can’t, we’ll replace the burst pipe with a new one. If it’s a watermain that’s burst and it’s under concrete, we can consider other options such as running a new watermain.
There are more watermain leaks in summer than any time of year
Your watermain runs underground and brings water from the street to your house – unless you rely on tank water at your place. When the ground dries out, it moves, cracks, and can cause pipes to stress and start leaking. In older homes, this pipe could be near the end of its lifespan and, hey presto, you have a burst pipe on your hands. How to know if the watermain is leaking?
Has your water bill been increasing recently or has Auckland Watercare notified you of high usage?
Can you see water seeping from the ground? If you find a wet area of concrete or garden that doesn’t seem to be drying up, then chances are you have a watermain leak.
What can you do about a burst pipe?
While fixing your plumbing problem should be left to the professionals, there are steps you can take before our super-efficient emergency plumber arrives.
Shut the water off
You need to stop water flowing out. Turning off the water can save your house from flooding and save your hot water cylinder from damage.
To turn the mains water supply off, you need to shut off the toby to the house: the valve that turns off the mains water. Also known as a stopcock, shut-off valve or isolated valve, you should find it at the front of your house, by the road, under a blue or black plastic cover.
If you have a pump, close the valve on the pump or water tank, and turn off the power to the pump.
No pressure ….
Next, turn on the hot and cold water taps to release the pressure and quickly drain the trapped water and steam from the pipes. This will stop the leak from causing further damage to your house. Use towels to soak up escaping water in your house, and if water has leaked near your electricity switches, cables or appliances, switch them off at the mains.
