Burst pipes
Leaks can occur for a variety of reasons, such as high-velocity water wearing down the internal wall of your plastic pipe. Eventually, the pipe weakens, and a pinhole is formed allowing high-pressure water to burst out. Pipe work, particularly Dux Qest, doesn’t last forever, and rats can also chew through it.
If you have a burst pipe in your house, we’ll repair it, if possible, or we’ll replace it with new piping.
What can you do about a burst pipe?
Call us on 027 265 4949. Fixing plumbing emergencies should be left to the professionals. However, there are steps you can take before our emergency plumber arrives.
Very importantly, don’t touch any electrical wiring or switches that you think may have been affected. If water has leaked near your electricity switches, cables or appliances, switch them off at the mains with dry hands.
First: shut off the water
You need to stop water flowing to save your house from flooding or save your hot water cylinder from damage. To turn the mains water off, you need to shut off the toby to the house. Also known as a stopcock, shut-off valve or isolated valve, it is the valve that turns off the mains water you should find it at the front of your house, by the road, under a blue or black plastic cover.
If you have a pump, close the valve on the pump or water tank, and turn off the power to the pump.
Next: release the pressure
Turn on both the hot and cold water taps to release the pressure and drain any water or steam from the pipes.
Then: manage the mess
To stop the leak from causing further damage to your house, put a container under the source of water to minimise the damage and use towels to soak up any escaping water.
Watermain leaks
Unless you rely on tank water at your place, the watermain runs underground and brings water from the street to your house. This is a plastic, galvanised or copper pipe and is not indestructible. Burst water mains do happen from time to time, and if the water main is leaking on your side of the water meter, then it is your responsibility to get it fixed and you need to contact us urgently on 027 265 4949.
If the leak is from the roadside or over the fence, then you need to contact the council.
When the ground dries out, it moves, cracks, and can cause pipes to stress and start leaking which is why there are more watermain leaks in summer than any time of year. This happens more often in older homes, where the watermain could be near the end of its lifespan.
Spotting a watermain leak
If your water bill been increasing recently or you’ve been notified of high water usage by Auckland Watercare, you may have leaking watermain. The other indicators to watch out for are water seeping from the ground or a wet area of concrete or garden that doesn’t seem to be drying up.
To fix it we may simply dig up the garden and repair a piece of pipe. If the watermain has burst and runs under concrete, we may have to cut a square in your concrete to get to the leaking pipe, or we can consider other options such as running a new watermain. In any case, we can help, make the repairs, and then reinstate concrete and gardens.
